The Brief
This project was to create a Digital Presence for a Fictional University Society. This would include a website about the society, the leadership, activities and events, a blog, social media pages and an email newsletter. We had a very limited timeline to complete this assignment and were in groups. The project had to meet the following requirements in the topics of Digital Presence, Content, Website Functionality and Look & Feel.
Digital Presence objectives included a clear call to action, consistency across platforms and data to support the establishment of a digital presence such as followers or members.
Content referred to original material, on-site tagging, appropriate images and text formatting.
Site Functionality criteria included embedded social media content, alignment and layout, search and navigation, and any functional features added to enhance user experience such as the embedding of Google Maps.
Look & Feel involved consistent experiences between mobile and desktop, ratio of images to text and site personality.
“Trinity Photography Society”
Our Group decided on a photography society - “Trinity Photography Society”, as it was a topic a number of our group including myself, had an interest in. We chose Wordpress to host our site and made both a Facebook and Instagram page. Facebook as it is very useful for students organising community groups and society events. Instagram was picked as it is the perfect platform for photography. As team leader I created and monitored the project gantt chart, the content plan and ran the meetings. We divided blog writing among the team. I worked on the website while my team members worked on the email newsletters and Facebook page respectfully. I also created a simple logo to use for branding and consistency.
Conclusions
We learnt a lot on this project and in hindsight I would do a number of things differently. We had chosen to use Wordpress as our free platform for our website as we wanted to continue and improve our knowledge of Wordpress. However looking back, for such a short project timeline and using a free hosted platform, I would use Squarespace or Wix going forward. I believe you can achieve a sleeker, more functional website in much less time on these user friendly platforms.
